Volkswagen Polo Hatchback (2009-2017) verdict
Should you buy a used Volkswagen Polo Mk5?
The Volkswagen Polo is a byword for dependability. It’s the sort of car parents buy for their children as a first car because it’s a safe bet that will see them right and always be later sold on for a good price. It’s not the cheapest, but this is reflected in the reassuring sense of solidity you get from a Polo. And if you choose the right engine and spec, there’s little to fault it.
There are some common issues it’s best practice to check for, and a few other niggles that you can do without. But because it sold so well when new, it means there’s plenty of choice out there, so it shouldn’t be hard to find a good one. Many people really look after theirs, and these are the cars you should be hunting for when browsing cars for sale.
What we like about the Polo Mk5
Refined, well-made yet small enough to feel nimble and city-friendly. Economical petrol engines (and the fun GTI), and diesel is very frugal if it’s still suitable for your location. Feels like a Golf that’s been on a diet.
What we don’t like
Unreliable early 1.2-litre engine, potential for neglected diesels, rather drab interior next to come superminis of this age, sometimes a little hard to spot if you park near a Golf.
