Summary
What does this car say about you?
It says that grey hair and disability don't necessarily turn a driver into a tedious blue badge jockey. In intimidating Indium Grey, the Scirocco looks the part and the car goes as well as it looks.
What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?
Most are impressed with the car's abilities. Many believe that the Scirocco feels far more refined and luxurious than its price suggests. Seating for four is comfortable and practical. However, the 'well-built' will struggle with rear seat access.
Would you buy this car again and why?
Yes I would, albeit in a different specification. The higher-powered TDI tempts me more than does the schizophrenic popwer delivery of the 1.4 TSI. The GT specification is desirable
What are you likely to buy next?
Another Scirocco (maybe post-facelift), with a greater measure of grunt.

Buying experience
Type of dealer you bought from?
Franchised
Did you buy this car new?
Yes
What price did you pay?
£26,400
When did you buy the car?
June 2012
Did you get a good deal and why?
My own research proved a useful ally in striking a good deal. In my experience, dealers respect an informed customer.
Is there any special reason why you bought this car?
I was looking for a car that combined practicality with driver satisfaction.
What was the dealer like?
Very accommodating. I was able to test drive several models before being loaned an example of my preferred car for some hours. Subsequently, I could track the construction and delivery of my particular car, by courtesy of the dealership's help.

Driving it
What's it like to drive?
The driving experience varies between relaxing and remarkable. Few passengers realise that the car is diesel powered, as it is both refined and rapid. The road holding is excellent, the handling forgiving and the remaining dynamics inspire confidence.
What's it like to park?
The Scirocco's striking, sports coupe lines come at a price. The broad rear quarters and small, high rear window substantially compromise rear vision. However, the combination of outstanding mirrors and a rear parking assistance negate this.

Living with it
Have you had any problems with the car?
In two words, not really. I ultimately found myself unable to get a reading in mph from the multi-function display. My passenger window occasionally misbehaves but neither issue warrants urgent rectification.
What's most practical about your car?
It's in a sharp suit but the Scirocco has a more than respectable luggage capacity. Dropping the rear seats makes it practically an estate car, albeit one with a high rear sill.
Favourite gadget, option or accessory?
The DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) offers three modes, tailoring the suspension characteristics and throttle and steering response. 'Sport' is fun, 'Normal' ticks most of the boxes and 'Comfort' is a good compromise between my failing spine and speed bumps.
