Fuel economy
A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test.
Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 23 - 47 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

If you go for a TDI model, the Sharan offers low running costs, but the petrol models are on the thirsty side and have quite high emissions. Volkswagen dealer servicing is usually more expensive than equivalents like Ford or Vauxhall, but the customer care side should be good.
As with most Volkswagen models, there is a Bluemotion model available – although it didn’t arrive until May 2008. This uses the 2.0 TDI engine and emits 159g/km of CO2 while returning 46mpg.
Like all Volkswagen’s this is well built and durable, but there have been recurring reports from owners of issues including problems with the air conditioning and electrics, in particular the windows.
