How much space is there?

The Volkswagen T-Roc is relatively spacious for a car of its size. Although it’s slightly shorter than the current Volkswagen Golf hatchback, it has a similar amount of passenger space and a usefully bigger boot. That means families will find it plenty big enough for a couple of smaller children and their associated clobber.

There’s pretty generous space up front, with enough for someone well over six feet tall to sit comfortably. There’s plenty of room across the car’s beam, as well. In the back, headroom and legroom are perfectly adequate for the vast majority of people, if not those of particularly tall stature. Add in a selection of useful cubbies, cupholders and storage bins, and the T-Roc becomes a very practical family car.

Boot space and storage

The T-Roc’s boot has a capacity of 445 litres – not a vast amount for this type of car, but comfortably more than you get in the Toyota C-HR SUV, or any equivalent hatchback. Fold the back seats down and cargo space expands to 1,237 litres, the 60/40 split-folding rear seats lying almost flat against the floor.

The boot floor is a flat, nearly square space. It’s height-adjustable, as well, sitting flush with the relatively high loading lip at the upper level – hauling in heavy and/or large items can be a bit of a strain. The space left beneath the upper level is deep enough for such things as spare shoes. There’s also a through-loading hatch in the back seat and some models have an electric tailgate.

Is it easy to park?

The Volkswagen T-Roc’s relatively compact dimensions make it quite an easy car to drive around crowded towns. It slots neatly into supermarket and multi-storey parking spaces; all models come with front and rear parking sensors, and all but the base model have a reversing camera.

Visibility to the front is pretty good, though the slim windows and sloping rear pillar restrict over-the-shoulder vision. Similarly, the back window is quite small. Park Assist is optionally available and takes control of the steering to swing the car into both perpendicular and parallel parking spaces. It sounds cool, but it’s actually a bit of a faff to use.

Safety

The VW T-Roc scored a very impressive five-star crash test rating from Euro NCAP when it was assessed in 2017.  Its score for adult occupant protection was particularly impressive at 96%. That rating has since expired and therefore you can’t make a direct comparison between its performance and that of, for instance, the latest Toyota C-HR, which was assessed in 2024. However, the T-Roc remains a very safe car that will provide good protection should the worst happen.

There are plenty of safety features fitted as standard to all T-Roc models including:

• Autonomous emergency braking
• Adaptive cruise control
• Driver attention monitor
• Traffic sign recognition
• Lane-keeping assist

Other features available on higher-grade trim levels or as an option include blind-spot monitoring and automatic high-beam headlights. There are also two sets of Isofix child seat mounts, one on each outer rear seat.
