Should you buy a used VW Tiguan Mk2?

Despite a huge amount of competition from many angles, the second-generation VW Tiguan asserts itself with a mature driving experience, a high-quality, practical interior and plenty of badge appeal. While there are some issues to look out for, if you choose wisely this does indeed represent a good used buy if you’re looking for a versatile family SUV.

Many Mk2 Tiguans were sold in swish R-Line Tech trim, which brings with it a sporty-looking makeover that really helps the Tiguan to stand out. As usual, though, if you want the best in technology the Tiguan had to offer, you’ll have to pay for it, and top-spec Tiguans aren’t that far off the price of truly premium rivals such as the contemporary BMW X1 and Audi Q3.

You should also expect to be pay slightly more than use examples of similar-sized non-premium rivals – such as the equivalent Ford Kuga and Mazda CX-5 – but in return you’ll be getting a more polished product. The Tiguan isn’t the biggest, best-value or best-driving used SUV on the market, but as a jack-of-all-trades it’s very difficult to match. We think it’s a really good family car.
