Volkswagen Vento 2.8 VR6 4d (1997/R) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Real value if you like consistent performance over a long time. Obviously the design is 2 generations old now, but still feels like good quality. Engine will probably last forever.
Costs
Not bad, actually. A bit thirsty but haven't had to replace or mend too much yet. (e.g. brake pads lasted 100k).

On the road
Driving
A little nose-heavy and a little harsh over patchy surfaces, but always well connected with the road. Somewhat heavy at low speed, but lightens up later. Engine sounds fantastic in the mid and top ranges.
Performance
Effortless and very flexible. Loads of torque from low revs and really strong from 3,500 upwards. Also, 3rd doesn't top out until 100, so overtaking is typically a one-gear sprint.

Living with it
Reliability
""140k and original clutch still fine"" probably sums it up... Two stoppages in 8 years: once due to the starter motor being corroded, once because the battery failed.
Image
Invisible to all but those who know what it is.
Comfort
Climate control is useful (black interior gets hot quickly in summer). Sports seats are good. Suspension best suited to smoother surfaces.

Security and Service
Security
Adequate... they tried, but didn't get it. Mind you, I think they were inept.
Service
Early dealer-servicing lived up to poor stereotypes. Recent specialists have been much better.
