Volvo 440 1.8 Si 5d (1994/L) Owner Review
-
Economy
Value
£295 for 10 months MOT and 4 m months tax. Bargain.
Costs
I had a 1.8 cavalier B4 - my 440 uses 3/4 as much as the cavvy!

On the road
Driving
I'm a stevedore by trade and I've driven worst cars that are brand new - mines nice and solid.
Performance
I've had a couple of 02 Passats at the lights. I was VERY surprised!

Living with it
Reliability
I'll say this now - this car has NEVER let me down and I've had quite a few bargain cars - best so far! Pre 94 models differ slightly.
Image
If you can go for the ones with boot lid spoilers & alloys - look much better otherwise your driving an uglier more reliable Renault 19.
Comfort
I'm tall (6'6) - could've been better, SRS fired on pass - bit tight for passengers. What do you expect for £295?
-
Security and Service
Security
Central locking works well - mine appears to have no alarm, so same as other reviews.
Service
Volvo service on the 440 is ridiculous! Find a specialist in your area - they'll be cheaper and far more knowledgeable on the pre Ford Volvo's. Apart from that there are lots of Renault 19 engines in scrap EURO engines, so spares are everywhere!

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Not quick off the lights, but long legs for a 1.8.
Other
I've had some dogs & so I took a chance on the 440 -despite what people have said and I'm pleased to say I'm hooked! Much better than I ever expected - test one and see what you think - you'll be pleasantly surprised. I'm after a 2.0 turbo next!
