Volvo 480 1.7 ES 3d (1992/J) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Parts are sometimes hard to obtain and original Volvo items are COSTLY! (£140 for an electric fuel pump?)
Costs
I do my own servicing, so the costs are minimal. But if something major goes, then it can be a real headache to find a source at a reasonable price.

On the road
Driving
Very nice car to drive, especially on long distances. I wouldn't want it to be any different.
Performance
Sufficient performance for the age of car and the price paid. I'm sure I'll be happy with it for as long as it's roadworthy. Clings to the road like a big magnet! :o)

Living with it
Reliability
Alt failure, front headlamp motor failure and dashboard electronics glitchy. All self-repaired from breaker's yard parts at little cost. Might be best avoided if you plan to have it serviced by a garage though!
Image
Unique... and not many of them on the roads now. I think they're one of the best models to roll out the Volvo garage.
Comfort
Comfortable seats and good ride... although a little bumpy at times, due to the low suspension.

Security and Service
Security
I retrofitted an immobiliser, although I don't think this car is particularly attractive to thieves. (Immobiliser only fitted because I love the car).
Service
Main dealers and genuine Volvo spares can be costly. But there are alternatives, should you have the time to search them out.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Renault engine works well in this model. Parts are fairly easy to obtain. Mine had a factory reconditioned one fitted 60k/miles back and it's been well serviced since.
Other
Electronics are well known to be problematic. But most of them are easily fixed, if you know a little about how it all works.
