Volvo 480 1.7 Turbo 3d (1993/K) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Easily great value at the stupid prices they're often given away for- as mine was! Cost more to maintain than to buy.
Costs
Forget Volvo for big parts/repairs, cheaper from other sources such as GSF. Insurance reasonable for what the car is.

Driving
Surprisingly able for an older car, with good tyres fitted will run and handle ably at speed. Smooth in urban driving, is best on the motorway or twisty country roads.
Performance
The Turbo as standard is still a reasonably quick car. Very even torque right through the powerband. However, the engine and turbo as standard aren't operating at anywhere near peak capacity. MUCH higher performance is available through ECU modification.

Living with it
Reliability
Some common rust issues, esp. rear arches, electrics can be niggly. Often there are surprisingly straightforward solutions to such problems. Engine strong and reliable. Mine hasn't let me down. Will need care and attention though, like all older cars.
Image
Idiosyncratic, sleek, gorgeous! Definitely an acquired taste, though. More beautiful than most modern dull faceless rubbish. Eye-catching to say the least.
Comfort
Seats are very comfortable, driver's chair highly adjustable. Rear seats just like front (only 2), and even recline!

Security and Service
Security
Fine for this age of car, alarm fitted as standard. Bad car for someone to steal as it's conspicuous by it's individuality and scarcity. Go and nick a BMW instead!
