Volvo 740 Estate 2.3 GLE 5d (1989/G) Owner Review

Economy
Value
The best £1350 I've ever spent!
Costs
I took the precaution of having a full service carried out just after I bought the car, including cambelt change and new discs/pads and dampers all round, on the basis that prevention is better than cure. A full exhaust system was under £100 from Kwikfit.

On the road
Driving
Wallows a bit through bends - even with new dampers all round - but always a joy to drive.
Performance
Lazy, understressed engine and masses of torque give lots of overtaking flexibility, but it wont win many traffic light Grand Prixs. Can be thirsty if driven enthusiastically but will return up to 30mpg on a long run if driven carefully.

Living with it
Reliability
See costs. A new set of leads cured an intermittent starting fault.
Image
I get a lot of stick from my pals over the image, but when they want double beds/matresses/wardrobes etc. moved they change their tune!
Comfort
Leather armchairs on wheels - very relaxing to drive.

Security and Service
Security
Poor, but not exactly the target of most thieves. An after market immobiliser and steering lock have protected the car so far.
Service
I have only dealt with the parts department of the local main dealer. Parts are expensive, but the staff helpful and knowledgeable. Volvo customer services were incredibly helpful and friendly with information by telephone and email.

Problems and Ownership

Intermittent starting problems due to chaffed insulation on the HT lead caused by rubbing on the block. A new set of plug leads with the correct length HT lead cured this.
