Volvo S40 1.8i 4d (1999/T) Owner Review

Economy
Value
It is very good value for what you are getting. It has equipment for everyday use and is very practical.
Costs
Servicing costs are terrible. Never to a Volvo dealer again for that. I went once (October 2004), and all sorts are happening to it now, sensor failure (software upgrade), noises when reaching 65miles/ hour. Parts are expensive too.

Driving
It is sluggish on initial acceleration, but does pickup well. Firm suspension makes the rigid so requires soft dampers to make the ride comfortable.
Performance
This is the best all round performance I have had from a car. Initial acceleration not so good, but it picks up well, the brakes are second to none. The response while changing direction is superb, and it's traction control is awesome.

Living with it
Reliability
I have not had a problem with my car, but the gearbox is a bit iffy.
Image
Less common that it's rivals and not as flashy.
Comfort
As the seats are firm, it can be a bit hard on the back for long runs, but because of the driving position (legroom, positioning of the pedal, and streering wheel) it conpensates.
