Volvo S40 (2004 - 2012) 1.6D S (06/07-01/09) 4d Owner Review
Want to know everything there is to know about this car?
In their own words
In general the car is an good drive with good handling and comfort for both the driver and passengers, the down size is the engine itself which even though is ok for the car, it is not as fuel efficient as other Volvo diesels that I have driven in the past and the 1.6 engine would appear to be under powered for the car. The engines on these cars appear to be troublesome in parts (especially the alternators, DPF's and turbo) and parts can be very expensive as most components will need to be sourced form Volvo and the computer system re-programmed by a dealership. The boot is smaller than the original S40 and will just about be ok for a family with older children as you would struggle getting a buggy etc. into the boot and having any other room.
In my opinion, if you want a Volvo either go for the bigger 2.0 diesel engine or go for the S60 model as these cars would appear to be more sturdy and less problematic.
How reliable do you find the car?
Even though when I bought the car it had a full main dealership service history, I still have had a catalogue of problems with the engine from a faulty EGR valve, malfunctioning MAF sensor, leaking injector, failed DPF (which had covered less than 10K miles) and a faulty alternator.About their car
