Volvo V40 Hatchback (2012 - 2019) D2 R Design 5d Owner Review

In their own words
Bought this car as an ex-demo model and utterly love it. It is superbly comfortable, capable of crossing long distances with effortless ease. The interior is classy and well built, with the seats a particular highlight.
It's ride can be a little harsh, but on those diamond cut alloy wheels it's not a surprise. Incidentally, take care as they are really-really easy to kerb. It also seems a little prone to stone chips compared to previous cars i've owned.
The engine is no powerhouse but perfectly fine for day to day use, with enough umph to get you up to speed and execute a well planned overtake. The gearbox is direct and satisfying. Handling is fine, fun enough to make me smile whilst being neutral enough to ensure a relaxing journey when needed.
The MPG estimate of mid 70's is, frankly, way off my own experience. But, I still find 55 mpg on my short morning commute and can get into the high 60's on longer runs.
It's load space is fine for me and a small family, but for more then one child you would need something bigger. It is a shame that the seats don't fold flat, but it's still fine for occasional trips to the tip.
I do miss cruise control, but the speed limiter works well. The sound system is outstanding and a definite highlight. The handbrake still being set up for left hand drive roads is a bit daft, as is not having a 'step' in the footwell for your left foot. It's a daft oversight from Volvo, who have clearly taken the right hand drive market somewhat for granted here.
I don't believe this car is for everyone but it suits me almost perfectly. Try before you buy and make sure you test drive it.
