Very strong with crumple zones and side impact protection, the V70 hasn’t actually been NCAP tested, although the S70 saloon – upon which the V70 shares its basic design – received an excellent four-star safety rating in independent Euro NCAP crash tests. The driver’s and side airbags increase occupant protection in collisions, and even the base models come with ABS and power steering.

Fitted with an immobiliser, deadlocks and an alarm as standard, the V70 is as secure as expected, while the optional satellite tracking system should deter thieves.

The V70’s boot capacity is large – that boxy back-end does have its merits – so you shouldn’t have any problems with luggage, especially with the additional space that the rear folding seats provide.
