As you would expect from Volvo, safety credentials are reassuring, but they’re not class leading. It scores four stars out of five in Euro NCAP crash tests where the best manage five stars. Driver and passenger airbags are complemented by a side impact protection system that includes side and curtain airbags. Options include a blind spot warning system that flashes a warning light in the wing mirror if you indicate or appear to be moving into the path of a vehicle to the side.

Security comprises alarm, immobiliser and deadlocks.

Reputation and a square tail hint at a sizeable load space, but in reality it’s only average when compared to rival estates (Mercedes’ E-Class and Vauxhall’s Vectra will both take the extra suitcase you’d have to leave behind in a V70). A shopping bag holder helps prevent groceries from spilling around the boot and there’s a 12-volt power socket in the boot too.

The rear seat backs have an adjustable angle to improve comfort or carrying capacity, and split fold 60/40 without the need to remove the headrests. The front passenger seat folds flat for carrying longer items. Roof bars are standard and rear facing additional seats are optional, but if you regularly carry seven then there are better options available (like Volvo’s own XC-90).
