Volvo XC60 verdict
Should you buy one?
Yes, and that’s because we think it’s a really likeable car. The XC60 is well worth considering if you want something premium but not one of the usual German luxury brands. It combines a high standard of safety equipment with plenty of passenger space and good ride comfort (unless you opt for the really big alloy wheels).
The refinement and general sense of calm provide a real sense of difference to the obvious rivals, too. And although the plug-in hybrid are expensive to buy, they offer deeply satisfying performance and the latest versions have significant electric-only driving capability as well.
However, the non-plug-in hybrid model isn’t particularly efficient and if you’re after a mid-size premium SUV with a more entertaining driving experience, you’re probably better off with an Audi Q5 or BMW X3. As a whole, though, we think the XC60’s rounded character and relaxed approach can be highly recommended if you enjoy a less demanding drive, and especially if you’re opting for a plug-in hybrid model.
Adam Binnie summed it up well after six months’ extended testing: ‘In a lot of ways, the Volvo is like a dentist. I don’t need to like the person in charge of looking after my teeth, I just want to know they’re concentrating on the task and hand at completing it with a high degree of competency. I can admire their ability without wanting to go on a spa break with them. That’s the XC60 to a tee – I don’t love it, but I don’t need to. It’s an absolutely fabulous family car.’
What we like
We like the relaxed nature of the XC60, combining seat comfort with refinement and powerful engines. The cohesive design approach to the interior is refreshing, too, and the safety equipment is extensive.
What we don’t like
The mild-hybrid petrol engine can be thirsty, larger wheels can upset the ride comfort, and the hybrids are expensive to buy, even if they also seem likely to be delightful to own.
