Should you buy one?

We’d wait and see. The Xpeng G6 enters a fiercely competitive segment and largely succeeds. It’s spacious, refined, well-built, and packed with technology, making it a solid alternative to the Tesla Model Y. But we need to see how the dealer back-up and warranty support stack up.

Against rivals such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, the G6 holds its own with impressive range, fast charging, and high levels of standard equipment. It’s quieter than the Ioniq 5 on the motorway and arguably better built than the Model Y, though it lacks the distinct design appeal of either. The Tesla still leads in efficiency and driver assistance, while Hyundai and Kia offer a more engaging driving experience.

For early adopters seeking a comfortable, high-tech EV without standing out too much, the G6 is a strong choice. Of the two, we’d plump for the Long Range because as such an accomplished motorway cruiser, we’d like to maximise that ability. However, its relative anonymity, uninspiring steering, and still-developing dealer network could be sticking points.

What we like

Impressive range and rapid charging speeds, spacious and well-built interior, high levels of technology and standard features – and finally, it’s comfortable and quiet on the move.

What we don’t like

Bland, anonymous styling, steering lacks feedback, and the infotainment can be overwhelming.
